When I go into a thrift store, I try to go in with a very open mind. I tend to see clothes hanging on the rack for what they could be, rather than what they are.
I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and do a little DIY work to turn what I’m imagining into something I’ll actually wear.
For example, I found this beautiful Shadowline nightgown that I’ve written about before. I loved it, but I never really wore it because of the way it fell on me. The draping was beautiful, but the length just wasn’t something I would normally wear.
Yesterday, my friend Aaron and I had a sewing day. We altered a bunch of things (post on that coming soon too!), but ultimately, my favorite thing we worked on was this nightgown. I turned it into a little babydoll dress something I’ll actually wear in my everyday life.
And, as my little sister would say, I look a lot less like I’m trying to haunt my own house.
I think there’s something really important about finding a piece you love parts of and being willing to change the little things that keep you from loving the whole thing. Maybe it’s the length. Maybe it’s the fit. Maybe it just needs a little something taken off.
Those things will never stop me from spending two dollars at a thrift store on something I love. If I can turn it into something I’ll wear all the time, it’s worth it to me.
Most of my favorite things I’ve found at flea markets and thrift stores just needed a little TLC, a sewing machine, and a friend who actually knows how to run the sewing machine.
