The importance of up-cycling

Upcycled vintage T-shirt

I love to upcycle my clothing. I genuinely believe almost any piece can be given a new life with zero sewing skills. (If you have them, even better! But not around here, folks… not around here.)

It’s one of my favorite ways to give old clothes sitting in my closet a second chance instead of letting them collect dust.

The shirt in these photos used to fit me like an oversized pajama top. With just a few cuts in the back and some simple ties, it became something I actually reach for. It took almost no time at all, and honestly, I love it way more now than I did before.

Another easy trick is hemming dresses that hit you at an awkward length. Now, I’ll admit, I don’t actually do this myself. I have a friend with amazing sewing skills who charges me exactly $0 to do it. Shoutout Aaron. But if you don’t happen to have your own Aaron, a sewing machine and a basic hem stitch can go a long way. And if you don’t know how? YouTube is an amazing place to learn.

Having confidence that I can turn a piece into something I’ll actually wear opens so many more doors when I’m thrifting. Instead of seeing clothes for what they are, I start imagining what they could become.

So don’t be afraid to grab the scissors or dust off the sewing machine. Your favorite piece might just be hiding inside something you’ve already written off.

Happy cutting and sewing!
